Broken Spanish: Mexican Food Redux

Chef Ray Garcia elevates the LA dining scene at Broken Spanish

An eclectic array of family photos adorn the walls of Broken Spanish, Chef Ray Garcia’s flagship restaurant in downtown Los Angeles, fostering an atmosphere of family and community.

Drawing inspiration and flavors from the city’s rich culture, the native Angeleno creates bright, bold and ingredient-driven fare that “expresses a Mexican-American narrative.”

An evening at Broken Spanish might include Caracoles, snails served with mushroom, mole verde and stinging nettle; Tamales with summer squash, corn, rajas and Oaxacan cheese; Quesadilla with oxtail, plantain, habanero and salsa quemada; or Rabbit with nopales, bacon and cherry tomato.

Not too shabby for a guy who majored in political science and business, originally planning on becoming a lawyer. Lucky for us, Garcia switched gears and paved himself a culinary path, which also includes the highly acclaimed BS Taqueria, and undoubtedly, much more to come.
