James Respondek was 18 years old when he made his first real estate transaction for the princely sum of $5,000. “I rode up on the back of a friend’s motorcycle, up to this little subdivision,” he recounts. “We looked around, and I found a lot.

It was the mid-1980s when Ed Kaminsky, a transplant from Ohio who was working in the jewelry business, decided to try his hand in real estate. Dominating luxury real estate in the South Bay, selling over 100 properties a year, Ed Kaminsky is engaged in businesses beyond selling properties.

Set on creating a faithful rendition of the architectural style, they carefully decked the property with bona fide features: cacti on the front lawn and thick roof beams (also called vigas) along the roofline with antique wood details throughout. They also managed to infuse the sprawling home with classic California Coastal features and unexpected, family-friendly twists.

Nicknamed “Nautica” by its builder and sole owner John Nugent, the home stands out for far more than just its size and proximity to the sand and surf, both of which are found in large doses right across the street.

If you’ve strolled along 17th Street’s walk street in Manhattan Beach, it’s likely you’ve slowed down to check out the sprawling Mediterranean Revival home poised towards the end of the sunny walkway.

In the 1980s and 1990s, a new class of Mediterranean and modern homes dominated the upmarket housing market in the South Bay.
