Blue Star Donuts Sweetens LA’s Treat Scene

Nestled among the brightly-colored shops lining lively Abbot Kinney is the unassuming, yet undeniably delicious, Blue Star Donuts. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, where founders Micah Camden and Katie Poppe first set up shop, this renowned donuttery serves haute-off-the-fryer, brioche-style donuts in a wide array of thoughtfully crafted grown-up flavors.

At Blue Star, expect to find Portland-bred favorites such as Blueberry Bourbon Basil, Hard Apple Cider Fritter and the O.G. (Orxata Glaze). All are made using only the finest ingredients—sustainable bread flour, European-style butter, whole milk and cage-free eggs from local purveyors—over an intensive 18-hour process to give the donuts their sumptuously soft, melt-in-your-mouth brioche-like texture.

To honor the new LA locale, Blue Star’s first store outside Portland, the shop is also serving up a host of California-inspired flavors like Piña Colada, Greek Yogurt Honey Granola, Strawberry Shortcake, Grenache Ganache and Mimosa, topped with a sparkling wine-infused, orange-scented glaze.

True to form, Blue Star is committed to focusing on the artisan nature of their products, adorning the shop with a minimalistic design featuring white-tiled walls, blonde wood paneling and an expansive glass counter that allows guests to view the freshly fried donuts as they are being glazed.

Whether you prefer them frosted, glazed or dunked, these sweet treats are a true donut-lover’s delight.
