Awash in the charms of a chateau in the South of France, the Point Dume home of Rachel Mumford of Barry’s Bootcamp offers serenity, elegance and the laid-back delights of small-town living within easy driving distance of downtown Santa Monica

When it comes to the creme de la creme of homes in Malibu, properties just west of Pacific Coast Highway and north of Zumirez Drive, where the shoreline juts into the ocean, are the ones to own.
An escape from the chaos of the city that every Angeleno dreams of, it’s the kind of place where neighbors know one another; kids ride skateboards and bicycles along bucolic roads with rustic split-rail fences; dogs romp across the sand; and doors are left unlocked during the day. At this time of year, it’s not unusual to see schools of migrating whales frolicking in the deep azure ocean. Weekday dawn finds the beaches crowded with the surfers who are drawn to this area for its legendary waves, a few of which they hope to catch before work. Even nights spent at neighborhood hot spots—Nobu, Soho House, Malibu Farm or Taverna Tony’s—feel less like dining out and more like intimate dinners with friends.
It’s no wonder then that Rachel Mumford of Barry’s Bootcamp fame purchased a home here. The well-toned pushing carts around Malibu Ranch Market or perusing produce at the farmers’ market on Sunday clearly look to the popular workout to whip them into perfect shape. The first to recognize the explosive potential of trainer Barry Jay’s unique classes, Mumford is not one to miss a sleek and well-proportioned silhouette, which she saw in 28861 Selfridge Drive. “Beauty and symmetry are very important to me,” shares Mumford of the home, which clearly reflects her influence. This is a house that begs to be photographed, with each moment spent here producing a flawless vignette of pleasing grace and allure.
Consider the moment of arrival, when the wooden gates open to reveal an inviting cluster of buildings. Just to the left of the entryway is the two-story guest house. Two bedrooms, a full kitchen and a generous sleeping loft under a steeply pitched roof offer friends and live-in assistance equal luxury, yet full autonomy from the main house (a separate entrance from the main road underscores its independence, also making it an ideal rental property).
