Loqui: Baja Bliss

Sample some of Mexico’s finest street food at Loqui

Inspired by Mexican street cuisine, Loqui taqueria dishes up a delectable array of authentic Baja flavors wrapped in sumptuous made-to-order tortillas. Although the cuisine has its roots in Mexico City, the concept got its start in northern California, as a pop-up stand behind celebrated San Francisco bakery Tartine. It was here that founders and long-time friends, Ari Ampudia and Cameron Wallace, a master bread baker at Tartine, decided to combine their talents to create a one-stop taco shop for those on the go.

After much success, Loqui recently took up residence at Culver City’s sleek new Platform complex, the concept’s first brick and mortar locale. Inside, the ambiance is informal and minimalist, very much a reflection of the food, with touches of industrial design and a small sunny patio just out back. While limited—and a little difficult to decode at first—the menu is a credit to Loqui’s commitment to delivering the freshest fare.

However, one needs only to know the basics to get a good idea of the appetizing meal that awaits. “Primos,” or tacos, are neatly wrapped packages of perfection filled with hot melted cheese, guacamole, beans, and salsa verde, topped with sizzling mesquite-cooked chicken or pork (or mushrooms for vegetarians). The “Molcajetes,” or bowls, offer up the same savory fare as the tacos, with rice, beans veggies and, of course, Loqui’s famous handmade tortillas on the side. The “Totopos,” or chips, are a must-try, and the perfect complement to any menu selection.

Pair all with the traditional Mexican wine, beer and sodas on offer and be prepared to be transported to a place of pure culinary bliss.
