Malibu is dotted with small wineries that will satisfy your thirst for award-winning wines while offering a slightly more casual and festive atmosphere than the larger vineyards to the north. Malibu is also home to several private wineries that will host private events, weddings, and corporate affairs.

I constantly marvel at how lucky we are to live in a state that’s so geographically diverse. Although we don’t experience seasons the same way the midwestern and eastern states do, I think we enjoy the best of both worlds where we can easily travel from mountain to seashore to bucolic plains all in a single day’s time. I was fortunate enough to spend a recent weekend in Napa Valley, and although I loved every minute of each timed and meticulously executed wine tasting, it got me thinking about the amazing and not quite so publicized wineries that grace the gorgeous canyons and coastline just outside of Los Angeles.

Founded in 1987, Rosenthal Malibu Estate Vineyard was the first winery in Malibu. Earning its AVA designation in 1996, the 28-acre vineyard is four miles from the coast and 1450 feet above sea level. Rosenthal offers an array of signature wines sourced from the Malibu estate, including Block M Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosenthal Merlot, Chardonnay, and Viognier. In addition, Rosenthal sources grapes from other parts of California to create their Surfrider label, which includes Albariño, Pinot Grigio, and Rosé varietals.

For a casual afternoon or evening outing, the Rosenthal tasting room is located just across from the beach in Malibu and offers live music, food trucks, cheese pairings, and ocean views from their garden patio. Wines can be tasted by pre-selected flights or by the glass on-site, and bottles and cases can be purchased to take home. For a more serious delve into the world of Rosenthal, book a private tour and tasting at the vineyard. You’ll enjoy a premium flight of both Rosenthal and Surfrider wines while surrounded by majestic California Oaks and hillside vineyards on the sprawling 250-acre estate.

Just a few miles away from Rosenthal, you’ll enter the Saddlerock Wine Appellation, home to Malibu Family Wines and the Semler family. Situated on 70 acres, Malibu Family Wines offers both the Semler label using locally sourced grapes to create Bordeaux and Rhone-style varietals—and the Saddlerock label, using grapes sourced from other regions of California. Malibu Family Wines tasting room is completely outdoors in a gorgeous setting of grass and trees. Seating is picnic-style, with rustic tables and umbrellas offering space for small and large groups. Live music on Saturdays and Sundays rounds out the convivial atmosphere.

Look for Saddlerock and Cielo Vineyards for more information. Regardless of whether you’re booking an event or just enjoying a day among the vines, make sure to add Malibu to your list of must-visit local attractions.
