When it came to finding the ideal spot for the first Godfrey Hotel on the West Coast, Oxford Hotels & Resorts settled on a parcel of land a block south of Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood surrounded by technology and entertainment companies, high-rise apartments, retail, restaurants and nightlife.

Set along a coveted Manhattan Beach walk street, a minute’s walk to the ocean and under 10 minutes from downtown, this inviting Modernist home—a bounty of cheerful living spaces spread among two structures—is a well-executed example of this idea.



Located in the Tehachapi Mountains area, the remote site on which this sustainable single-family retreat was built known as “Sawmill,” presented both challenges and opportunities for the project designer Tom Kundig of Olsen Kundig.
