The opening of the city’s design debutante marks new territory for Knoll, which comes to L.A. by way of New York City and has only two direct-to-consumer retail locations—our local outpost the sequel to its longer-running show in NYC. Coveted for its modern designs—those geometrized, cleaned-lined things from Mid-century Modern masters like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and current L.A. legend Frank Gehry—the au courant emporium is meant to connect two of the city’s more prolific communities: residential design professionals and consumers.
Built in 2013 by Caras Homes, the property’s well-maintained exterior consists of classic white siding, black plantation shutters, and a bright red door. Inside, the gorgeous upper level is light and airy with a slightly vaulted shiplap ceiling in the living room and a lovely fireplace tiled in a modern Moroccan motif. The fireplace is flanked by built-in cabinetry with wainscoting door details. Massive Nano doors lead out to a generous patio for indoor-outdoor living. The entire floor is trimmed with oversized windows, which allow natural light and incredible views to pour into the space.
Architects M. Brian Tichenor and Raun Thorp are the quintessential team—reciprocal thinkers, simpatico in intelligences and appreciations, and nothing if not prolific, having completed more than 350 residential and commercial projects nationwide since launching their eponymous L.A. practice Tichenor & Thorp in 1990.
When developers first laid eyes on the parcel of land where they hoped to build a new luxury, mixed-use rental community, the downtown Santa Monica site was dotted with outdated fast-food joints and an antique mall. Parking also was difficult, as cars entering and leaving disrupted traffic flow.
Minimalism is still all the rage. For the past few years, this word has been omnipresent in the pages of the world’s best design and decoration publications, from Paris to Hong Kong to Los Angeles. How has this trend become a movement? A focus on quality over quantity and the use of clean lines, subtle colors and natural materials in a simple way—these are some of the principles of minimalism, a design aesthetic that aims to create peaceful atmospheres.
Set on creating a faithful rendition of the architectural style, they carefully decked the property with bona fide features: cacti on the front lawn and thick roof beams (also called vigas) along the roofline with antique wood details throughout. They also managed to infuse the sprawling home with classic California Coastal features and unexpected, family-friendly twists.
A Beverly Hills parcel of land that once held a 1957 ranch house owned by comedian Charles Nelson Reilly now is home to a stunning display of architectural prowess and innovative design by renowned Swiss architect Roland Schallibaum. Think an artful, modern exterior flanked by stunning sculptural features paired with abundant Zen-like elements including metal and wood accents, calming water and fire features, towering walls of glass framing sweeping canyon and ocean views, a private meditation garden and a striking infinity-edge pool.
