Spartina Reinvented

A New Haute Spot Spartina Welcomes Diners on Melrose Avenue

A nod to his New York restaurant of the same name opened in the ‘90s, Spartina is the latest concept by veteran chef Stephen Kalt, who was previously at Caulfield’s in Beverly Hills.

Prior to launching Spartina in December, Stephen Kalt collaborated on its design with his wife, Shelley Schulze. Thus, the market-driven Italian restaurant combines vintage elements, like school chairs in the dining room, olive leather banquettes and custom French blue tables, to create a warm space with clean lines.

A photographer, Shelley Schulze also contributed some of her landscape images to adorn the walls, resulting in the restaurant’s contemporary California vibe. Potted plants, shelves of books and eclectic vases make guests feel at home in the modern space. An outside patio is half the size of the dining room, but has a cozy feel with tables arranged under a string of lights.

Spartina’s signature dishes include Burrata Raviolo with sea urchin, shiso and basil; Brodo with duck wings and gnocchi; and Pizza with Brussels sprout leaves, pig’s ear and pineapple.

Desserts introduce a sense of familiarity with items like a Walnut Tart and a Broken Lemon Tart with seascape strawberries. Not exactly the Spartina from Tribeca, but definitely the Spartina for West Hollywood.
