Dtla’s Burgeoning Arts, Culture, Dining and Nightlife Scene Is Set to Welcome Hotel Figueroa by Year’s End
Situated in Downtown Los Angeles across the street from L.A. Live, the Staples Center, and the Los Angeles Convention Center—and close to The Music Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Broad museum—the redesigned Hotel Figueroa will offer a blend of old and new.
The street formerly known as Grasshopper (or Calle de los Chapules) has come a long way—and along with it, a historic building that got its start in 1926 as a refuge for female travelers. Later it served as a funky, Moroccan-themed hotel for tourists and locals alike.
After acquiring the property in 2014, partners GreenOak Real Estate and Urban Lifestyle Hotel Group tapped Santa Monica-based design firm Studio Collective to help return the historic hotel to its original Spanish Colonial splendor—complete with ornamental ironwork, wooden ceiling beams and skylights, and private wrought-iron balconies overlooking Figueroa Street.
Meanwhile, updates will include 268 contemporary guest rooms and suites; a premier suite with hidden door access to a private party room; a pair of destination restaurants and a quartet of bars; private event venues; and a completely refurbished ground-level pool and lounge area surrounded by a 10,000-square-foot desert-like oasis.
Several different room types will be available, each with its own distinct charm and personality. Expect custom-designed furnishings; wide plank hardwood flooring; bespoke wallpaper; blackened steel and brushed brass bathroom fixtures; custom decorative tile; and artwork by established and emerging local female painters, including Alison Van Pelt and Sarah Awad (a nod to the building’s female founders).
Then there are the stellar food and drink offerings. Four-time James Beard-nominated Chef Casey Lane (of Venice Beach’s Tasting Kitchen) will helm Breva (a dining room serving French-Spanish tapas-style dishes) and Veranda (a casual al fresco eatery offering farm-to-table fare specializing in wood-roasted meats and vegetables and pizzas).
Dushan Zaric (of world-famous New York bars Employees Only and Macao Trading Company) will lead the cocktail program, which is highlighted by Bar Figueroa—a custom-built two-story, curvilinear bar with brass and wood accents offering everything from fresh-baked pastries and espresso to pintxos and craft cocktails featuring special gin and imported tonic selections.
In addition, the 28-seat Bar Alta will serve as a reservation-only bartender’s table showcasing nationally recognized mixologists and beverage innovators.
And, if that’s not enough, Hotel Figueroa also will offer numerous services and amenities. Among them: a science-based sleep program; pet-friendly programming with beds, bowls, treats, a dog-walking service, and pet spa partnerships; weekend yoga classes; and a private art collection.
