Jason Saft, Founder of Staged to Sell Home, Only Needed Four Hours to Completely Transform This Brooklyn Brownstone
Jason Saft has mastered the art of creating the “wow” effect. Case in point: This Italianate brownstone in Brooklyn built in 1853 underwent a metamorphosis in just a few hours, with colors and patterns introduced throughout.
“Timing was clearly the biggest challenge,” confesses Jason Saft, who leads the company Staged to Sell Home.
“I had spent about 30 minutes walking the house a few months back when it was fully occupied. The owner was in the space for another month and then some cleanup was done after her belongings were removed. About four days before the install was the first time I had been in the house since the initial walk-through.”
Despite the extremely short time frame, Jason Saft was able to envision the overall style and type of furniture and art he wanted to feature. He packed about 30 pieces to play with; as each went up, he rearranged the others around it.
“I spent about two hours figuring out the art and we finished the project in four hours total,” he remembers.
The color palette came from three main themes, starting with the emerald tiles in the entry and kitchen, as well as the location of the house in the Fort Greene Historic District. Jason Saft also wanted to create a space that would feel alive, rather than favoring soft neutrals. The result is a mix-and-match of forest green complemented by gold and yellow touches in a playful atmosphere with a baroque-inspired aesthetic.
“The parlor is absolutely exhilarating, and it was that sense of exuberance that I wanted to take advantage of,” says Jason Saft.
Among the main inspirations was the work of star designers Ken Fulk and Robert Stilin whose “love of over-the-top details and layers of art and accessories…culminate in one-of-kind homes,” as Jason Saft describes.
In the living area, a custom vintage sofa combines with a CB2 Mercury table lamp and several antique pieces such as the trompe l’oeil console, oil painting and bust. The open space also comprises the dining room where Sarah Sherman Samuel Whit dining chairs by Lulu and Georgia surround the Providence table by CB2, all sitting on an eye-catching green Garden Maze rug by Nordic Knots. The entry, adorned with a Chubby chair by Dirk van der Kooij, and the kitchen, with a vintage painting and pommel horse, are also connected to the main living area.
“Everything had to be considered; it was like a working on a great puzzle,” explains Jason Saft. “Each piece represents a different style, time period and design discipline, while altogether creating an artful home that looks like someone spent years curating everything.”
