TWENTY-SIX ARTISTS. ONE MUSEUM.
Every other year the Hammer Museum shines a spotlight on Los Angeles art, debuting new installations, films, paintings, performances and more from a diverse roundup of local artists. The third exhibit since the series’ 2012 debut, Made in L.A. 2016 takes over the entire Hammer Museum this summer and includes displays of clothing from experimental fashion label Eckhaus Latta, choreography Kein Paradiso from Adam Linder and layered, abstract paintings from Rebecca Morris.
Unlike other location-based exhibits, where works might be clustered around a singular aesthetic, Made in L.A. 2016 focuses on the individuality of the artists themselves.
“Made in L.A. 2016 investigates what is vital and distinctive about this city as an international destination and cutting-edge art center, and how its artists—from vastly different backgrounds and disciplines—resist and defy categorization,” explains Hammer Museum director Ann Philbin.
Open until August 28, 2016, the exhibit is accompanied by a calendar of screenings, lunchtime art talks and performances.
VISITOR TIPS: Located in Westwood Village, the Hammer Museum spans three levels and multiple galleries, many of them devoted to contemporary works. (Note, however, that Made in L.A. is the only exhibit at the Hammer this summer.) On the ground floor you’ll find a chic, fresh-air courtyard with plenty of areas to relax, and a smart cafe. The Hammer Museum is open every day except Monday, and admission to the galleries and programs is free.
