Letting a summer afternoon fade into the evening while sipping a perfectly brewed craft beer is a singular pleasure. At the new Downtown Los Angeles branch of Mikkeller Bar, the famed Danish brewer, visitors have upwards of 50 options to indulge as of the most recent late-June draft list.
“Luckily for me, the California beer scene is incredible and I am often spoiled for choice,” General Manager Will Sperling says.
Right now, top choices include the “hazy, hoppy” New England-style IPA, barrel-aged beers, and spontaneously fermented Belgian ales, plus Sperling’s personal favorite, Tilquin Gueuze.
“It’s a blend of traditional Belgian Lambics and it changed my whole perception of what beer could be,” adds Will Sperling.
Housed in an expansive converted warehouse, visitors sit at the bar’s long communal tables, the 35-foot white oak bar, or facing enormous windows to watch the Downtown scene. (For more intimate occasions, private seating is available.)
The atmosphere is ideal for not only sampling top-notch beers but also chef Enrique Cuevas’ fine-dining-cum-beer-hall menu with Danish roots showing in the smørrebrød, a Danish-style open-faced sandwich. Sample the sausages made and smoked in-house, or opt for lighter fare with a fresh beet salad or cheese and charcuterie board.
Suffice to say, with an authentic menu and a tap list fit to make a beer-lover weep, it’s Mikkeller’s time.
